How Biblical Counseling Works
What is biblical counseling?
Biblical counseling is the personal ministry of God’s Word to real-life problems. We listen carefully, apply Scripture to the heart, and help you grow in Christ through repentance, faith, and practical obedience. The goal is lasting change, not just symptom relief.
What is ACBC?
ACBC stands for the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors. It is the largest and most established organization that trains and certifies counselors who are committed to the sufficiency of Scripture. Certification is a rigorous process involving training, exams, and supervised counseling so that those who seek help can have confidence they are meeting with someone who is theologically sound, practically equipped, and accountable. You can learn more at biblicalcounseling.com.
How is this different from therapy or “Christian counseling”?
We believe Scripture is sufficient for the problems of the soul. We do not mix psychology with the Bible or treat God’s Word as one tool among many. Counseling is discipleship: speaking the truth in love under the authority of Christ and His church.
Who do you counsel?
Individuals, couples, and families facing issues such as marriage conflict, anxiety, anger, grief, pornography, parenting struggles, and other heart-level problems. Marriage counseling is a particular focus.
What does a session look like?
Sessions are typically 60-120 minutes. We gather information, identify the heart issues beneath the symptoms, open Scripture together, and assign practical homework so change continues between meetings.
Is there a suggested donation?
Beginning January 1, 2027, biblical counseling is a ministry of North Idaho Bible Church. Church members receive counseling free. For non-members, we ask for a suggested donation of $50 per session. The suggested donation is never required, and no one will be denied counseling because they cannot give. The church may decline or end counseling at the elders' discretion for other reasons.
Do you take insurance?
No. Biblical counseling is a ministry of the Word, not a medical or mental-health service billed through insurance. Many people find the investment worthwhile because the focus is on heart change rather than diagnosis and symptom management.
Is what I share confidential?
Yes, within biblical and legal limits. If there is clear danger of harm to yourself or others, or in cases of abuse involving a minor, we must take appropriate action. We also encourage involvement with your local church whenever necessary.
How long will I need counseling?
It varies. Some issues can be addressed in a handful of sessions; others take longer. We work toward clear goals and do not keep people in counseling indefinitely. Most counseling lasts between 12 and 16 sessions.
What is your cancellation policy?
Please give at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations or no-shows take a time slot someone else could have used, so we appreciate your care in letting us know early.
Do you meet in person or online?
Both are available depending on location and circumstances. We can confirm the best option when you reach out.
